Can you really go 10000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oils?

I have seen synthetic oils advertising that you only have to change the oil after 10k miles or even as long as 15k miles. Is this a marketing ploy to get people to buy more expensive oils? Is this really okay for my motor? Can you really go 10000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oils?
The reason we change engine oil is because it breaksdown due to heat and wear, and because it gets contaminated with carbon from the combustion process and from small contaminants that inadvertantly enter our engines. Synthetic oils do not breakdown at the same rate as do mineral oils and therefore do not have to be changed as often. Synthetic oils do get ';dirty'; like conventional motor oils and therefore, you should at least change the oil filter every 5,000miles and replace the lost oil with fresh oil. As far as the old 3,000 mile standard, that is obsolete information. Today's oils have detergents which allow them to last longer without breaking down or getting contaminated as easily. Synthetic is better oil, but it cost nearly twice as much. The overall cost is about the same when you consider that you have to change about twice as often with conventional oil. My dad is a mechanic of 35 years, and I was a mechanic for 10 years until getting an education and moving on. We both use conventional oil and change every 3000 miles, but we do it ourselves and realize that it's overkill.

Long story short, can you go 10,000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oils? Answer, yes. However, I recomend changing the oil filter at least every 5000 miles because any oil gets dirty over time. Can you really go 10000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oils?
the 3000 mile LOF standard is 40 years old, and perpetuated by the oil companies, auto manufacturers and the parts industry. all of which profit greatly from this propaganda. honda`s factory spec is 7500 miles.(with standard oil) with any vehicle made after 85 or so with less than 100,000 miles. i would recomend 7,500 to 10,000 miles. on a newer vehicle it jumps to 12,000 to 20,000 miles. i build 4 banger racing motors for nissan cars.

and i drive the crap out of them too, i run the oil till its starts to get thin. about 35,000 miles (i change the filter every 5,000) and i have never had a motor go down because of oil viscosity breakdown. for an everyday driver, avg. vehicle 10,000 on standard oil is fine. add ptfe and double it. just change the filter every 5,000 and your good to go. getting people to believe this after 40 years of media pressure is impossible. so i will probably get yelled at by 100 peeps on here ...
I have been using synthetic oil for the last 80,000 miles and my car has over 200,000 miles on it. I change it every 10,000 miles with no problems. It is more expensive but with the miles I drive, I would be changing the oil in my car every month.
With some yes, but synthetic is expensive. And once you start using it you have to use it. You can't go back to natural.
if you have a new car then i would say no more then 5000. Its not the oil breaking down that is the problem, it is the dirt and grime that accumulates in the oil. Especially if your in a dusty area. Do this, pull your dip stick out and put some oil between your index and thumb and rub the oil in a cirular motion, if it feels smooth and soft then your fine, if it feels grimy or rough then change the oil. And ALWAYS change your oil filter 3000-5000 miles, even if you dont change the oil.
In Europe the standard oil change is at 15,000 kilometers or about 10,000 miles. The additives in the oil break down before the oil does,it is not just the oil itself that protects the motor it is the additives also. With synthetic oil the additives break down as well because they are using standard additives, the synthetic part is the oil only.

Synthetic oil is good because you can change it at 10,000 miles when the addivites wear out which is long enough to get your money's worth.Car repair shops want you to come in often so they can sell other repairs which may be necessary. In the past cars needed more adjustment (tune-ups) and oil was not as high quality as it is today.Motors were not as good in the past which damaged the oil.Crap oil tortured in crap motors needed changing often then a fancy dinner of Chinese food from a can.

I do my own oil changes and know what to inspect while under my car. After learning car repair I like mechanics more because their stupid sales job is funny. They seem to be more concerned about vacuuming my interior than doing craftmanlike work. Most people with antique cars do their own repair so if you are concerned with longevity then take their hint.
