I have a Honda Accord w/ 100000 plus miles, can a synthetic oil be better than conventional oil?

I have used conventional oil up to now? Will I be just wasting money or does it make a difference in a 100000 mile car?I have a Honda Accord w/ 100000 plus miles, can a synthetic oil be better than conventional oil?
There is no right or wrong answer to this question - first off.

Some things to consider:

synthetic oil is by its very nature or design ';slipperier'; - if thats a word - than conventional oil. So if you have an oil leak - it will be ';leakier'; than before. And if you don't have a leak now - you might after you switch over to a synthetic.

synthetic oil is about 40% more expensive - which is significant enough that you should consider the additional expense.

and lastly - some cars ';seals'; don't respond well to the change from a mineral based oil to a synthetic - and there are dozens of seals that will come into contact with that oil.

My suggestion to you would be to stick with conventional oil and stick to a ';namebrand'; oil , change the oil at regular intervals and your engine may very well be ';much'; happier in the end.You may also want to use a ';high milage'; oil like Castrol GTX - which helps reduce oil ';burn off'; in high milage engines.

Synthetic oils are gereally a better compound of oil. Conventional oil comes from petroleum crude oils by distillation or other refining methods and whilst they are good they do lack in some areas.

Synthetic oils have regular oil in them but also contain certain compounds in them that dont occur in regular oils which improve a variety of qualities of the oil. These compounds are manufactured (synthesised) in the chemistry lab.

Synthetics will always do a better job of lubricating your engine regardless of the mileage.

As the engine gets older, in terms of mileage, the only thing you should really need to change is the viscosity (thickness) of the oil but at 100,000 miles there should be plenty of life left in the engine (as long as you havent been revving the hell out of it). Switch to synthetic if the price doesnt hurt too much
I would go with syntehetic oil. Conventional oil has a variety of molecule sizes even after they filter them out. To understand this think of marbles on a table, conventional oil has marbles of different sizes whereas synthetic oil molecules are uniform ( because they were all made the same size). Imagine placing a piece of wood on the marbles. With the synthetic it would be stable, with the conventiona it wouldnt be. I've used Mobil 1 synthetic oil in evry car I own and every car I have owned has gone over 250,000 miles.
no it wont be you have 100k miles if you had 10k maybe it would be ok it has cleaning properties in it and it may cause your car to develop leaks but it isnt that much better oil works basically the same it dont matter if you pay 1.50 a qt or 6.50 a qt just change it on time and your car will last
You will get different answers. After 25 years in automotive service-I still use convension (petroleum) oil because I'm not convinced synthetic is worth the price (others will disagree).Keep changing oil regularly (3k-5k miles) and on that car....REPLACE TIMING BELT if it hasn't been done.
