Is it better to use synthetic oil in my bike or not? What are some pros and cons?If I use synthetic oil in my 07 electra glide can I go longer between oil changes?
FIRST OFF.........DO NOT RUN HD SYN3.....IT'S JUNK.........I AM A CERTIFIED HD TECH, AND I WILL TELL YOU FIRST HAND....HD DOESN'T KNOW JACK ABOUT OILS!!!!!!!!!
For deacdes, HD said to never run synthetic in their engines, their reason....it will cause the bearings to ';skate';.........but ask anyone on the drag strip running a top fuel 800+ HP engine what they run.......FULL SYNTHETIC.......their bearings don't skate!!!
By popular demand of the public, HD finally released their SYN3 back in the early 2000's......manufactured by Sunoco. SO........
Second......why would you WANT to go longer between oil changes?......esprcially on an Ultra, the baggers are subjected to to more engine strain than the other models due to their weight, plus they run hotter from not as much aie flow, that's why they have a larger oil tank to aid in cooling. FRESH OIL IS CHEAP INSURANCE AGAINST ENGINE FAILURE. Standard oil you should change every 2500 miles. You CAN go about 3500 on synthetic, but why? Scheduled PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE set by the factory are based every 2500 miles, IT IS BEST TO CHANGE YOUR OIL EVERY 2500 MILES....SYN or STD. Keeping up on the maintenace, prevents major breakdowns. It's btter to spend $400 or so a couple times a year than spend a few thousand to repair something that was caused by lack of maintenance.
As the other guys have said, synthetic does make your engine run cooler and lubricates much better than standard oil.
The best synthetic to run is 1) AMSOIL or LUCAS 2) Mobil 1
It is ok to run the same synthetic in the primary as you do the engine.......but NEVER use that same oil in the trans. HD says you can, but it makes the trans hard to shift and noisy......run minimum 75/90 gear oil......best if its 85/140......the absolute hands down best trans oil on the market is RED LINE full synthetic Shockproof 85/140...it will make your trans runs smoother, quiter and shift easier. If I use synthetic oil in my 07 electra glide can I go longer between oil changes?

Synthetic retains viscosity by resisting shear (chopping up of molecules) which makes its particularly good for wet clutch applications. Its also clings to mechanical parts so you have less wear at start up.
Yes, you can go longer between oil changes. I believe HD is selling some synthetic products.
For Charles B: The idea that you can't switch back to ';dino'; oil is a holdover from the earliest days of synthetic oil, when it was used only in commercial air liners. ';Blended'; oils are part dino and part synthetic.
Besides that, I've done it.
I run synthetic oil in my 07. I agree for the most part with what vtwin said. I use it primarily because it keeps viscosity a lil longer. I also put alot of miles on. I like to feel a little safer when I do go over my miles a little. I have run 2 different synthetics (not syn3) I prefer Amsoil only because my local independent bike shop stocks it. I have access with my work to various thermal Imaging equip. I ran my own test of synthetic vs. standard hd oil. I did see a difference. I don't think the difference really makes a difference. I could only see minor differences in temp. I also have a road glide with a 103'; big bore. It puts out alot of heat so I added a oil cooler. Red line is definitely best for trans it will quite it down significantly.
yes synthetic oil is very good for a motorcycle it helps the motor run cooler and lubes the the engine great its very good, no dry start ups. you can run longer between oil changes. but I heard once you use synthetic its not good for the motor to go back to regular oil, but I would still-change at regular intervals.
cons-price. pros-better wear resistance, lower operating temps, more mileage between changes, better cold weather flow. the temperature at which (quality) synthetic oil begins to break down is much higher than regular oil, since thermal breakdown is the main cause of degradation in oil, a good synthetic properly cooled and well filtered could last almost indefinitely. of course in the real world thats not possible, but synthetic oils resistance to heat means it will last longer. ps-synthetic oil does not use viscosity enhancers, regular oil uses it because you get what you pump up then change it to what you need with enhancers, synthetic oil is 'made' to the viscosity you want, thats why its synthetic.
Synthetic will run a little cooler. But it's the additives in the oil that break down. They put the same additives in synthetic as they do dino. So I would say no......you shouldn't go longer between changes.
syn is better and it doesnt break down/7500 miles easy
Don't know too much about bikes but I asked that of a bike mechanic for my v-star, and he said no, the oil in that bike is somehow used in the clutch, and it would ruin it.
I don't know how true that is, so take it for what its worth
I would never use synthetic in a wet clutch transmission. Honda Gold Label is good.
