There's an enormous difference. 5W-20 and 5W-30 Mobil1 pours a full 18 degrees lower than regular motor oil. 53 below zero to be exact. Probably the most important thing about low viscosity synthetic motor oil the oil pump is able to force the oil through the oil galleries faster and with more volume. Cold starts is where 80% of all engine wear ocurrs. low viscosity (5W-20 or 5W-30) ADSORBS heat away from frictional surfaces quicker with more efficiency. It has better EP (extreme pressure) additives which creates a far more lasting film around the crankshaft and bearings, rods and bearings, camshaft lobes, lifters and the entire valve train. It also has a much stronger longer lasting detergent package to keep everything inside your motor clean.
Were you aware it takes less horsepower to pump low viscosity oil than a thicker higher viscosity mineral or synthetic that's NOT called for in your manual? Fuel economy suffers with good old high viscosity molasses oil in the crankcase?
Here's what to do to lower your oil change costs without sacrificing the use of synthetic motor oil. Look in your handbook in the specifications page, how many quarts is required for an oil and filter change. Walk into Walmart automotive dept. and pick up a gallon jug plus any extra quarts of synthetic Mobil1 oil that is needed for an oil change. You'll have less than $25.00 invested. Any new car dealer willl change your oil well below $30.00. They will NOT refuse changing your oil because you are not using their oil. In fact you could demand that they return your oil can back filled with their low dollar 10W-30 and use it in your lawnmower.
Look closely in your service manual (glove compartment) for the recomended oil change intervals. Nowadays 5,000 miles is usually a minimum particularly if you're using synthetic oil. Don't let any garage twist your arm to advise you anything other the your manual recommendation.
You are using better quality oil and your engine clearances are tighter than ever before plus they run relatively hot which drives off condensation, gas wash down from cold starts and prevents build-up of sluge and varnish.
You are not wasting your money as synthetic oil is so far surperior a compareson would be foolish. Go to: Mobil oil.com and read all the specifications of their 5,000 %26amp; 7,500 mile oil and compare the results with Mobil1.
If you go through cars like money's no object I've waisted your time and mine.
Good luck to ya in any event. Is there a real difference between synthetic oil and regular oil?
Most synthetic oils are good for up to 7500 miles. Some say longer but it depends on how often you drive and how far.
Regular oil, changed at every 3000 miles with the filter, will keep your engine at top condition. You can change the oil at home for about $20 including filter and maybe a little more than that if you want a friend or someone to change it.
The biggest problem with any of these oil change places is if they suck the old oil up through the dipstick. They will miss all the contaminants in the pan.
It is always best to drain the oil from the bottom when the engine is cold to ensure complete evacuation.
$80 is to much.
all motor oils wear out. the inhibitors and other additives degrade as well as the oil turns acidic due to combustion by products.
the last guy does not know what he is talking about.
synthetic oils offer a longer time between changes, typical 5000miles vs 3000 miles for regular oil.
kmart, or god forbis walmart sells synthetic oil for about 29.00 for a five quart bottle. filter costs about 5 dollars.
autozone has a special for synthetic oil and filter.
they will also recycle the oil.
most suv, you can reach the drain plug without jacking up the front end. you will need a 16mm wrench for the drain plug, a filter wrench and a pan to catch the oil.
i still take mine to a quick lube once in a while to have the chassis lubed as well.
yes there is a difference, synthetic oil does not wear out
just change filter on occassion and add a quart of
fresh... it gets dirty, but doesnt wear out
I use to change mine every couple of years..
the answer is: check your owners manual for suggested oil and change intervals. generally speaking synthetic is used for high performance vehicles. I personally would not use synthetic oil in anything I own. and in spite of what ';ridin'; says all oils wear out. the rule is never go longer than your manufacturer suggests no matter what oil you use.
Yes there is!
