Should I be using synthetic oil in my vw diesel?

I have a 2000 Vw Jetta Tdi. Should I be using synthetic oil or is regular ok? I have never used synthetic oil in the 3 years I've owned my Jetta. Have I recked anything?Should I be using synthetic oil in my vw diesel?
All VW models except those powered by the 2.0 liter non turbo motor since 2000, require syynthetic oil. However, since you have a diesel, yours requires an oil that will meet VW specification 504.000, of which only a specially made Castrol Synthetic meets this requirement that I know of.





However, I understand that VW has issued a bullentin since 2005, which specifies what oils meet the 502.000 requirement (gas engines) and 504.000 requirement (diesel) motors. You are required to maintain the engine/powertrain warranty to use the correct oil. Since you are a second owner, the powertrain warranty is only for 5years/.60,000 miles so it probably is already out of this warranty. I have not seen or can verify this information, however, several sources say that a list does exist. You can probably obtain the information by calling VW during normal business hours M-F at 1-800-822-8987 and ask for owner relations.





Having said this, it is always a good idea to use Synthetic Oil regardless, given the heat that is generated by a diesel and turbo powered motors. The sheer strength of a synthetic oil is much higher than a regular oil and has both a higher pour temperature before jellying up and staying liquid enough to pour in -20 degree cold. The importance of the oil to stand these temperatures cannot be overstated; indeed, there are benefits even to non turbo motors. On my own personal vehicle, I have 214,000 miles and still use less than 1/2 quart of oil at oil changes every 5,000 miles, very good for any motor and its likely that the motor will still be good when I either sell or otherwise retire my vehicle (due to normal aging, its 1998 model). Besides, studies have shown up to .5 mile per gallon fuel economy improvement vs regular motor oil or synthetic blends.

Yes, you should, and why not use the best? Take advantage of the long oil change intervals and help conserve our resources. 1 year, 20k miles.
If your manual CALLS for synthetic, use it. Otherwise, you can buy regular oil at Walmart that is designed for use in diesels. I run it in mine. Don't use regular motor oil.

Synthetic is recommended. More than likely if you have performed regular oil changes then you should be OK but it would be a good idea to switch to synthetic. Milage that you have put on the vehicle is significant to answering your question as well as driving style. Hard driving, stop and go, etc. The dealer or a qualified mechanic could do a compression test to see if there is any indication of excessive wear which would result in lower compression numbers than in an equivalent milage vehicle. Looks like your car is multi owner so the original owner probably drove with synthetic before you drove the vehicle. For detailed information see SOURCE.

You should use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40,its actually fully synthetic,check out the mobil website their should you can check what is recomended for your cars exact application with spec sheet etc.(very helpful)


i've used it in golf tdi.it is a little bit expensive but its worth it in the long run as all mobil oils are garenteed

You probably haven't wrecked your engine by not using synthetic, but with the extra protection of synthetics and extended drain intervals recommended by European auto manufacturers, it makes sense to use a high quality synthetic that meets your engine manufacturer's specs.
