conventional oil is made by mildly refining crude. the molecules are uneven and large
there are actually 3 types of synthetics.
those made by rebuilding the refined crude into even small molecules.
those made from a polymer that gives a similar result to the double refined crude
those made from natural gas.
they all actually work more or less the same. they are smoother and cleaner and lubricate significantly better. they operate at higher temperatures, pour into much lower temperatures and generally are superior for your motor in every way.
they were originally developed with high performance aircraft in the WW2 era. conventional oil would not stand up to the high heat and pressure produced by the 1400 hp rolls motors and similar things used int he fighter planes of the era. it would break down within minutes and the motor would fail. thus synthetics were developed. they were used in europe after the war and did not make it to the states until much later (early 70's) in automobiles.
the myth that once you start to use synthetics you can never go back started then in the 70's. once it was true, when cork was the common gasket material. since noone uses that material in cars anymore, that is no longer true either and has gone from a truth to urban legend based on history. What is the difference between regular oil and Synthetic oil?
regular is simply petroleum, like unrefined oil, synthetic it made from chemicals, like plastics and vinyls and things of that sort
Basically regular oil is from mother nature and Synthetic is man-made, with poly synthetics that all for less heat/friction which can cause damage to your engine. The synthetics last longer too.
synthetic is better in high mileage vehicles or vehicles driven a lot of miles. Once you go synthetic you can not go back. You can usually go longer in between oil changes.
