How often do you need to change synthetic oil?

I have a 2009 Jetta, and the manual says the next maintenance is at 10,000 miles, but that would mean it would last for that long? That seems too long. How often do you need to change synthetic oil?
I have a 2008 Nissan Frontier and I run mobile 1 synthetic oil in it and change it around 5,000-7,000 miles... if I have the time for it which is why I typed a 2,000 mile difference.

It says its good up to 15,000 miles protection.... You think I would run it that long in a new truck? no

so with that being said im sure you will be safe but I would change it at 5-7,000 milesHow often do you need to change synthetic oil?
Your answer is depend ant upon the conditions you drive in.

As a reference, several years ago Consumer Reports decided to test motor oils. At this time none were synthetic.

Many were brand name and some were generic oils. All were 10W-30 with the SH additive package. (The top oil at the time)

The scenario was set in New York City and the test vehicles were New York City Taxi Cabs.

40 cabs were brand new from the start and 10 had 75,000 miles on them. The test lasted for 2 years.

The test was to do oil changes every 7500 miles.

At the end of the 2 year test the engines were dismantled and checked for ware.

Not a single oil failed or broke down.

So you can base you answer from there.

If you drive in construction areas where there is a lot of flying dust and dirt, you need to change it more often.

If you run a synthetic oil you don't need to change the oil as often but you still need to change the filter to keep the oil clean.

Now a part most people overlook. The Filter.

The best filters by far are made by Wix.

Mike
I would say 5000 depending on if you drive on many dirt roads or not and if you do alot of stop and go driving. The bottle has in fine print that the oil manufacturer does not assume liability of engine damage as a result of improper maintenance. Another words their saying that you the oil is only as good as it is clean not the so called 15,000 mile protection after all is it?
I would change it at 3 - 5,000 miles for optimum oil quality all the time in your car.
