What were the some of their reasons for the R%26amp;D on synthetic oils? Is there any possibility to replace the natural oil with them for the vehicles? How successful were the Germans on their E%26amp;D of synthetic oil during WW2?
The Germans had great success with synthetic petroleum. Due to the fact that they could not obtain petroleum from outside Germany for most of WWII they were forced to develop other methods and, for most of the war their military and economy subsisted mainly upon synthetic petroleum products created from coal.
While it was successful and very effective for the Germans during war time it has not been used widely since due to its economic cost difference compared to free market petroleum products. Since the Germans did not have access to large amounts of natural petroleum however, it was extremely effective and efficient during the war.How successful were the Germans on their E%26amp;D of synthetic oil during WW2?
German domestic oil resources were inadequate to support their modern army and air force. The only large oil resource were the Rumanian oil fields, which became vulnerable to long range bombers after 1943, and were overrun by the Soviets in late 1944.
They did have some success with synthetics. The problem was it only had a storage life of just a few weeks before it began to break down in to its individual components, which would foul an engine to the point it would no longer run. I don't know much about this development. I don't know what the ingredients were. All I've ever read is that it wasn't practical.
