Or is the regular oil best for engines? Also I have heard that if you use synthetic, you can't go back to regular oil, is this true? Are there any advantages to using synthetic oil?
Synthetic oil is only truly beneficial for high performance
engines...It is great oil but like gasoline, if your engine is
designed for and runs well on low octane fuel, there is no
point is using the more expensive high octane fuel..Are there any advantages to using synthetic oil?
The big advantage of synthetic oil is the long usage of synthetic between oil changes. It is quite common for car manufacturers to recommend 10,000 mile oil change intervals when using synthetic oil. On late model cars, after year 2000, the synthetic oils can be safely used for 15,000 mile intervals. If you have an older, good running car with low mileage, you can safely use synthetic 5W-30 oils. The problem comes when the engine is burning oil, or leaking oil. Usually, low viscosity synthetic oils will increase oil consumption and/or increase leakage. For those persons with older cars with lots of miles, CASTROL makes a High Mileage oil that is supposed to reduce oil consumption. For those persons that want to try a synthetic oil, you can first try a low cost oil, like CASTROL BLEND in whatever viscosity you normally use. Try this CASTROL BLEND, fix any leaks, and then decide if your car is a candidate for SYNTHETIC. You can go back to the standard petroleum based oil any time you choose so long as you change the oil filter(s) at the same time.
Synthetic is by far much better. It last a lot longer and is better overall for your engine. You can go back to regualar oil, that is not a problem. I have done it plenty of times and have never had a problem. Saying it is not ok is just a sales jimick. I have worked with cars all my life and I have worked for NAPA for 7 years.
I went to synthetic oil a couple of years ago and it was the best move I could had made for my engine, However, I had to drop down to a synthetic blend due to a front main seal leak. It may cost a little more, but, it is the best thing you can do for your engine. It made my engine run smoother and quieter. not being to go back to regular oil is a mirth! If you choose to use synthetic oil, I don't believe that you will want to change back!
You can drive more miles without an oil change on synthetic, and it is safer for your engine.
The drawbacks are that it is more expensive, and yes, you cannot go back to reg.
It's not that you cant go back to regular oil, but you should stick with one or the other....if it is a high milage engine, sludge may be your friend in the fact that running any cleaner will cause leaks. Synthetic oil has its advantages, especially on a new engine thats using it every oil change, but on an older engine, you will notice a bigger difference from changing your oil with 4qts oil and 1 qt Lucas oil stabilizer (anyone thats done this will know what I mean, and anyone that says it makes no difference obviously hasnt tried).
All Oil breaks down, and starts to burn. Synthetic oil has a longer life the convential oil. But one thing you have to know, that most people dont belive is that you have to change you fillter after 3000 miles. And you can always go back to to Reg. Oil.
